The local presidents from Texas Retired Teacher Association District 14 met at the Conrad N. Hilton Center in Cisco for lunch on Thursday, August 31, 2023. The meeting was hosted by the District 14 officers and Eastland County Ret i r edTe a c h e r s ’ Association. District 14 officers included President Ruth Stewart and Carole Clower from Eastland County Retired Teachers’ Association; First Vice President Paula Haynes, Treasurer Susan Leamy, and Past President Sharon Daugherty from Abilene Retired Teachers’ Association. Eastland County RTA President Gail Norris, Treasurer Kathy High, and Past Presidents Tammy Loran and Kathy Glidewell helped to welcome guests.Presidents from local chapters included Presidents Gail Norris (Eastland CountyRetired Teachers’ Association); Patsy Sanford (Rolling Plains RTA, Roscoe); Vanessa Murray (Scurry County RTA, Snyder); John and Marilyn Kieke (Stephens County RTA, Breckenridge; Dellnita Jones (Schakleford County RTA, Albany; and Janna Dowell, representing Steve Post (Abilene RTA); and some of their local officers.Special guests TRTA District 10 President Gary Schepf and District 15 President Karen Hoelscher presented a program about improving an onlinepresence for local chapters and districts. AMBA Jacob Dunham also presentedmany benefits that can come with joining TRTA along with giving some door prizes.The delicious Barbeque meal was catered by Schaefer Family Farm representatives Paula Schaefer and Babshi-Coleen. (The BBQ meat was doneby Brian Schaefer.) They also decorated the beautiful cake to celebrate TRTA’s 70th birthday this year.The presidents received packages of cards and buttons to let friends and neighbors know about voting FOR Proposition 9, which will permit the COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) for retired teachers. They were also invited to theTRTA District 14 Fall Conference luncheon at the Abilene Country Club, North on September 14th. All retired public school teachers and personnel are invited to join TRTA, the state organization, and it can be done by going online at trta.org

Making Complex Nonfiction Fun to Read by Vera Day I have an engineering physics degree. I totally get it. Nonfiction, especially complex or scientific subjects, can be boring. But if an author can connect to the reader on a more personal level by channeling the subject and its examples into a character, then it’ll be easier for the reader to grasp and more fun to read, too.

Patriot Day Freedom Walk To Be Held September 11

The Ranger Veterans support Group will have a Patriot Day Freedom Walk on Monday September 11th at the Vietnam Memorial Park in Ranger. The program will start at 10:30 AM and be over at 12 noon. We will walk the perimeter of the park. It is too hot to walk down the hi-way. Around the park it will be a lot cooler with the shade trees.

Cisco loses to Wall 27 to 10

Wall defeated the Cisco Loboes in football at Chesley Field in Cisco 27 to 10. This marked the second loss in a row for the 2023 season. Last week Cisco lost to Clyde by a score of 40 to 28. Cisco's JV Team recorded its second victory of the season at Wall Thursday night winning 37 to 13, and a week ago also defeated Clyde JV 34 to 32.

The Gorman Panthers made their large homecoming crowd happy on Friday by rolling to an easy 72-26 victory over the Evant Elks at Brogdon Field. With the win, Gorman ran its season record to 1-1. Evant fell to 0-2.

The Gorman Lady Panthers continued to shine on the trails this season. The squad raced its way to 11th overall at the Brownwood Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Overall, the GHS girls were 11th in the 18-team field. Hadli Hampton paced the Lady Panthers in the race. She finished the race in 77th position. IN all, more than 200 girls competed in the varsity girls’ division. Delila Crain

CHISHOLM TRAIL EXHIBIT COMING TO EASTLAND COUNTY MUSEUM

Eastland County Museum is pleased to announce that it is hosting the Texas Lakes Trail traveling exhibit on the historic Chisholm Trail beginning August 31. The Texas Historical Commission celebrated the 150th anniversary of this fabled trail which took millions of longhorns north to railroads in Kansas. The money from the sale of the longhorns brought Texas out of the financial disaster following the Civil War.
