My grandmother, Lilly Lucretia Stephens Donaway, had an aunt who died crossing Sandy Creek at high water in 1926. Her name was Missouri Margaret Nusbaum and my grandmother inherited her 80 acres and a trunk that was stored underneath the kitchen sink at my grandparents' farm west of Cisco. I was told “Stay out of Aunt Sis' trunk.”

SAN ANGELO, TX (11/30/2023)-- Angelo State University’s chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) national honor society recently inducted its fall 2023 class of 73 new student members, including Samantha Thomas of Eastland, Texas, during a special initiation ceremony in the Houston Harte University Center.

On December 13, 2023 the Bluebonnet Chapter of Association was hosted by the City of Eastland. 15 City Secretaries met at The Connellee Hotel and Civic Center in Eastland. Eastland Mayor Larry Vernon and Eastland City welcomed City Secretaries from across the region and provided a meal of yummy chili, beans and potato soup The meal was sponsored by Clint Coffee State Farm Insurance, who, along with the City of Eastland, provided Goody Bags to all attendees. Several attendees brought items for a Silent Auction. This auction helps provide funds for our scholarships for continuing education or TMCCP Cer After the meal, the City Secretaries conducted their quarterly business meeting. Highlights of the meeting include: newly elected officers taking their Oath of Office; the 2023 Blue bonnet Chapter Municipal Clerk of the Year was awarded to Abilene Deputy City Secretary Kaitlin Richardson.

First United Methodist Church Eastland’s Christmas Cantata “ The Seven Noel’s” presented songs to Light the World on Sunday evening. The Cantata, directed by Cody Hutcheson, drew a large crowd.

St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church celebrated El Dia de la Virgin de Guadalupe, a festival in honor of the Virgin Mary and the belief that a man encountered Mexico’s patron saint, the Virgin Mary, in Mexico City on December 9 and then again on December 12, 1531. The nativity set from the Kamon’s Estate was donated to the historical Conrad N. Hilton Center & Museum in 2019. The nativity set needed new paint and Paula Schaefer, local artist stepped up to the plate and has finished both Mary & Joseph. They are on display at the Conrad Hilton Center, located at 309 Conrad Hilton Blvd. in Cisco, until the 1st of January.

The Eastland Lady Mavericks kept their district record unblemished last week by powering their way to back-to-back wins over Early and Peaster.

The Gorman Lady Panthers continued to win on the hardwood last week … and to slide in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ weekly rankings. The GHS girls, despite a district-opening rout of Three Way, slipped two spots in the Dec. 18 rankings to No. 6 overall.

The Gorman Lady Panthers had four players score into double figures last Tuesday and cruised to an easy 75-13 rout of Three Way in their District 7-A opener.

The Eastland Mavericks had plenty of fireworks to be pleased about last Tuesday as they closed out the 2023 portion of their high school basketball schedule.

The Ranger College men’s basketball team went into the holiday break on a high note this past Saturday by grinding out a 76-65 victory over Murray State College.
