Friday, March 17, 2022 marks a grim anniversary for many in Eastland County. In the late afternoon on that date fast moving, ferocious wild fires collectively known as the Eastland County Complex Fire - burned 54,463 acres and destroyed 158 structures overall, according to official reports. Property, livestock, and wild-life could not escape the devastation.

African Children’s Choir performs concert at Eastland’s First Baptist Church

The EHS Maverick Band has been accepted to the UIL State Wind Ensemble Festival in May of 2024 at the University of Texas at Austin. This is a high honor for only 16 bands who apply and “make a first division in concert and sightreading”. The UIL SWEF site says: 1. The goal of this event is not to win an award, but rather to accept the challenge of making music for the sole purpose of performing at the highest level possible for an appreciative, supportive audience in an optimum acoustical space.

Bethel Baptist Church in Eastland is having a huge Rummage and Bake Sale Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25 from 8 AM to 5 PM. There will be clothes, children’s sports uniforms, furniture, linens, kitchen stuff, jewelry, purses, toys, glassware, plants, what nots, fabric, craft kits and patterns, and lots of miscellaneous. They will also have bake sale items of cakes, cookies, pies, candies, breads and cobblers. And last but not least there will be raffles. Hope to see you there!!!

A free Teacher Retirement Seminar will be sponsored by Area 14 Texas Retired Teachers Association on Monday, March 20 at 9 a.m. in the Taylor Room of Region 14 Education Service Center at 1850 TX-351; Abilene, Texas 79601. Registration will start at 8:30.

The Cottonwood Historical Association will again be hosting an entertaining musical line up with dinner on Friday, March 24th. The Musical kicks off with dinner at 5:00 pm until 7:00 or until everything is gone! On the menu is King Ranch Casserole, or sandwich, salad, and your choice of dessert and drinks. The music will start at 5:30 and features a variety of tunes from blue grass to country, some country classics and even rock ‘n roll.

Saturday, March 18th at 5 pm will be the Olden Musical. Bar b que sandwich’s, chips, baked beans, dessert and drink will be avaialable for $7.00. Come and enjoy an evening of food and music.

Saturday, March 18, the Desdemona Activity Center will host our first fish fry of 2023. We will have fish, chicken tenders, beans, potato salad,french fries, slaw, hush puppies, desserts, & all the extras. Serving time is 5:00 PM—7:00 PM. cost is by donation.

Texas again leads state in new corporate projects Texas once again has topped the list for new and expanded corporate facilities added in a year, according to Site Selection Magazine. With 1,028 new projects in 2022, the state had more than the next two states combined Illinois and Ohio.

Third Part Series Remember Dave Arnold showed up with a Sheepskin Treasure Map at Clyde, Texas, in 1902, finding a stone carved map, as well as copper plates, and daggers, but no treasure. He then went 62 miles to the NW up near the Forks of the Double Mountain and Salt Fork of the Brazos and found a second carved rock, as well as a copper plate, a copper dagger, a copper key, 42 gold buttons, some epauletts, a silver cross, and a sword, but again no treasure. There was a Mexican Sheepherder on the river that helped interpret the stone map and scribbled his directions about how to find the treasure on a brown paper sack which he gave to another Anglo on the river named Will Stuart. A third so-called Spider Rock Map was found in 1909 NE of Rotan near where Gyp Creek runs into the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos. Supposedly, all of these artifacts and the stone maps were placed in Dr. C. L. Terrell's drugstore safe in Haskell and were destroyed in a fired in May of 1909. The Rotan Rock was discovered after the fire so survived.

ABILENE, TX (03/02/2023)-- Alexus Rains of Cisco was named to the Abilene Christian University Fall 2022 Dean's Honor Roll. Rains is a senior majoring in Health & Human Performance.

It’s nice as I drive around the county to finally see some green plants out there, but as they say, “every coin has 2 sides”. On closer inspection, a lot of those green plants are “weeds”. Keeping with the “2 sides” saying, not everything about weeds is totally bad. If you are running livestock, many of those weeds are a welcome source of protein and animals, including wildlife, are making good use of lots of them. Beekeepers reap the benefits of weeds early blooms as bees are really getting busy now going from 1 to another turning pollen into honey. The wildflowers Texans love are mostly what some could argue are weeds. By definition a weed is “any plant out of place”, so if it is something besides what you intend to grow, it is a weed. Right now, there are a lot of weeds popping up in everyone’s lawns, flowerbeds, and gardens and the calls are coming in fast and furious.

We’ve all advised in advance of Monday, April 3, 2023-- for in-person tax value discussions and that’s just around the corner, so it is obviously time for us to consider being prepared-- because we can be assured at the Tax Office and a board will be ready to “listen” to our opinion of values and then announce their own opinions of what they “think” of “the values” based on their own “walk around” valuations, or what they’ve been told.

Eastland Memorial Hospital’s Rehab. & Wellness Center Manager Mitch Akers, PT, DPT, Cert. DN, discussed causes, signs and symptoms of Vertigo, and how it can be treated, with a large crowd at the recent Lunch and Learn program in the EMH Conference Room. Akers commented that the subject of Vertigo was a highly requested topic.
