Eastland Memorial Hospital’s Rehab. & Wellness Center Manager Mitch Akers, PT, DPT, Cert. DN, discussed causes, signs and symptoms of Vertigo, and how it can be treated, with a large crowd at the recent Lunch and Learn program in the EMH Conference Room. Akers commented that the subject of Vertigo was a highly requested topic.
He noted that Vertigo is challenging to diagnose as the common causes are sometimes misunderstood. In short, Vertigo can be described as when one is standing still but feels like everything is moving.
Causes can be from inner ear problems, medications, traumatic brain injury, and recently are seen from Covid - post acute symptoms, Akers added. Risk factors mentioned can be: women over age of the age of 40, Osteoporoses, Vitamin D deficiency, Migraines, head trauma, and Post Covid Syndrome (as listed before). Akers suggested educating ones self about Vertigo and knowing how to treat the condition, but getting to a doctor quickly if noticing Vertigo symptoms, as most are treatable. Local doctors are very good about helping find the right treatment for Vertigo, he assured.
