The 4th Annual Boots and Bling Charity Ball sponsored by Eastland Memorial Hospital Volunteers is just around the corner. This year’s Gala will be held on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, at the Lumber Yard Event Center in Eastland. We will be entertaining a MARDI GRAS Theme! The pre-party Party will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30. A live Auction will kick off after dinner. Conclude the evening dancing the night away with the ZAK WEBB band. We will also have a silent auction going on throughout the gala. Our goal is to raise money for purchases needed for local healthcare at Eastland Memorial Hospital. Your generosity will ensure our patients have access to high quality care when considering their health care options.

At our annual MDT dinner we recognize our Multi-Disciplinary Team members for their hard work. Each year, MDT members vote on the MDT Member of the Year.

On January 25, 2024 a little after 6:00 PM, Eastland County Sherpatched to a residence in Gorman, Texas in reference to a deceased person.

On January 18 Hayden Tuttle was selected to compete in the Calf Scramble at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo where he caught a calf. He will be competing next year at Fort Worth with a heifer. Hayden is from Gorman showing under County 4H.

Amy O’Brien County’s five papers Glenn, President of the Eastland Civic League & Garden Club, gave the club’s January program. Theme of the program was “History of Eastland County’s Newspapers and how they tie back to YOU.”

Eastland ISD will hold an election for the Board

Letter to the Editor: I am writing this letter of support in honor of my HS Basketball Coach Doug Galyean. Coach G was hired by my father, Paul Boswell who was once Superintendent of RISD, in 1980 right out of college to be the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Ranger HS. He coached us from 7th grade through our Senior year when we graduated in 1986. We were very good in Basketball during those years. He helped to produce multiple THSCA All Stars, District Titles and Playoff teams, and Collegiate players during his time, (yes in RANGER TEXAS) but more importantly he helped produce even better young people who became even better adults. Coach was and is a shining star in the profession and a significant leader, mentor and advocate of coaching we all aspire to be. He is the true reason why many before my generation, during my generation and long after my generation chose to be a Coach. I am saddened personally and professionally in regard to what has transpired recently in Eastland. I am not here to lay blame on anyone or to call out anyone. I do intent is to make it very clear to everyone that Coach Doug Galyean is an incredible person that gave his heart and soul to Eastland ISD without hesitation. He served there for 25 years and could have easily been at a bigger more high profile school and job but he chose EHS time and time again. It is very disappointing to see his significant and impactful tenure end like this to be honest. The landscape of educational based athletics has changed in his 40 year career and in my 33 years of being in the profession. As an Athletic Director and the son and grandson of Superintendents I was taught to be upfront, honest, fair and loyal. To be above personal or political agenda. To support, advocate and to uplift the majority to ensure the team was always at the forefront of any individual dynamic. I am truly disappointed in news...via social media. Coach Galyean’s commitment, dedication and legacy via Eastland HS and those 25 YEARS of GRADUATING CLASSES deserve better.

Dr. Cone Rice, whose dental practice in Eastland burned to the ground on April 15, 2014, is now opening a new dental office, Complete Dental Care, in Cisco. The grand opening will be on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at noon.

Ed Pet Brown, who was head of the crew that laid the brick for the brick streets in Cisco beginning in 1919, held the Middleweight Wrestling World Championship Belt. More recently, Billy and Suzzone Franks, who own ranch land where Eastland and Callahan counties meet, have won 13 Halter Quarter Horse World Championships and 9 Paint Horse Halter World Championships. Their trophy room is fantastic. They are selling their Three Nails Ranch on the Scranton Exit Road off of I20 and have bought Terry Bradshaw's Ranch near Thackerville, Oklahoma. Bradshaw, another World Champion, led his team to 4 Superbowl Championships.

Dads save the date! From 7 pm 9 pm, The Myrtle Wilks Community Center is back with their legendary Father- Daughter Dance, now in its 15th year! Put on your dancing shoes for an evening of bonding with your little ladies. For just $5, you can dance the night away, or go all out with our dineand- dance package for $20, which includes a buffet served by JC’s Deli! Dinner Starts at 6pm! But hurry! In a Special Called Meeting on Monday, Jan. 19, held by the Eastland County Commissioner’s Court, and following a discussion with County Sheriff Jason Weger in executive session, Eastland County Commissioners voted to enter into a contract with the City of Rising Star for the Sheriff’s Office to take over law enforcement services for the City.
