By Tommy Wells The Eastland Mavericks will take their shot at nailing down the Texas 7-on-7 Football Championships this week at Veterans Memorial Park in College Station. The Mavericks are one of 32 Division III teams to have qualified for the single-elimination tournament.

The City of Eastland Historic Preservation Board began accepting applications April 3, 2023 for the 2024 Historic Preservation Grants. The application period runs through July 3, 2023. The board anticipates making recommendations from the applications to the City Commission at their regular September monthly meeting. The 2024 Grant period runs October 1, 2023 through September 1, 2024. Approved grants must be completed and reimbursed by September 15, 2024.

Central figure in Paxton case charged The Austin real estate developer who is at the heart of Attorney General Ken Paxton’s impeachment was arraigned on eight federal charges Friday, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Nate Paul was arrested by the FBI on Thursday. Paul, 36, has been accused of providing financial benefits to the attorney general, who in exchange intervened in several legal issues involving Paul. That connection led in part to the Texas House impeaching Paxton on May 27. He now awaits a trial sometime this summer in the Senate.

Benefit Concert at First Methodist Church Eastland

Texas Department of Public Safety officials reported that an Eastland resident, Sherry Ann Maxey, 64 years of age, was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Jesse Speer on June 6 at 1:05 AM after she was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 20. The accident occurred within Ranger city limits.

The Creature Teacher was a great success! We had 176 people in attendance. The students got to touch a boa constrictor, a giant lizard and a kangaroo. We would like to thank Bobby Blackwell, Texas Farm Bureau Insurance for sponsoring the Creature Teacher.

July 4th will be celebrated Saturday July 1st at the Ranger Memorial Vietnam Park.

The Maverick 7-on-7 Football team qualified for the State Tournament. They qualified by winning a tournament in Abilene on Friday, June 10. The Mavericks will compete in the State 7-on-7 Tournament in College Station on June 22-23. Go Mavericks!

The Eastland County Commissioners’ Court met in a regular meeting on 06/12/2023 at the Eastland County Commissioners’ Courtroom in Eastland,Texas. Judge Hullum called the meeting to order at 9:02 a.m. and declared a quorum, followed by a prayer and pledge of allegiance to the flag.

A house fire in near-by Ranger took the life of one male last Wednesday. The fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall. More will be reported as information becomes available.

Not speaking for the newspaper, but simply the opinion of the editor: Mr. Trump did much good during his first term--not perfect, but knew how things get done-- and he did them, to accomplish good things that needed fixing and doing. Not without mistakes, but done for the benefit of the entire nation.
