Indepenence Day History
Indepenence Day History

George Washington issued double rations of rum to all his soldiers to mark the anniversary of independence in 1778, and in 1781, several months before the key American victory at the Battle of Yorktown, Massachusetts became the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday.

It Seems To Me
It Seems To Me

We can still celebrate our Independence! A few years ago I traveled to Hawaii with friends and took a tour on the USS Missouri, a ship known as the “Mighty Mo”, anchored in Pearl Harbor. As I walked through the ship, memories drifted through my mind of some months I had served on an aircraft carrier in peace time. I was greatly impressed that this 887 foot long ship, weighing 58,000 tons, could travel up to 33 knots (38 mph).

47th Annual Cisco Writers Club Contest Now Open
47th Annual Cisco Writers Club Contest Now Open

by Vera Day https:// twitter.com/VeraDayAuthor Cisco Writers Club sponsors a writing contest each summer. This is its 47th year. Should you enter contests in general and this contest in particular? Contests always flex your writing muscles, so that’s a plus. But beyond that, winners get bragging rights, their author names publicized, and, in this case, monetary awards. I’d shy away from contests that charge an arm or a leg, but the Cisco Writers Club contest fees are extremely reasonable at just $5 each.

Conflicting Stories About the Beginning of Football in Texas
Conflicting Stories About the Beginning of Football in Texas

The Houston Chronicle printed an article in 1994 about the 100th Anniversary of Texas High School Football in Texas. I wrote them and said, “You did pretty well because you just missed it by one year; it began in 1893, the same year that the University of Texas first played a football game against Texas A & M.” I never got a reply from them.
