Jnue 15, 12 noon An eating and lifestyle approach to reduce risk for diet-related chronic disease

The Eastland County AgriLife Extension Office will hold an introductory educational program on commercial hair sheep and meat goat production Friday June 2 at 1:00 pm. The program will be held in the Judge Scott Bailey Center at 102 N. Lamar and cover basics in breeds, selection, herd health, nutrition, facilities, and marketing. A farm tour of Jason and Brandy Jones’ Dorper Sheep Farm near Rising Star will follow, providing an opportunity to visit with successful producers in the industry and hear their story. Congratulations to the Siebert Singers who earned a Superior rating at the NRH2O Music Festival on Tuesday, May 16. Students sang “Bonse Aba”, a traditional song from Zambia which means “All who sing are called children of God”. They also sang “Why We Sing,” composed by Greg Gilpan, featuring soloist A.J. Borrero.

Due to concern for the children of the Eastland community, the” Backpack Food for Kids” program has completed another successful year through Siebert Elementary School. Thirty children were assisted with extra food on weekends and holidays. Teachers identify children who are experiencing food insecurity (lack of food) and parents of these children complete paperwork to enroll children into the program. The program is funded by local individuals, businesses, and churches. From your heart to their need. No government assistance is provided. The board is very appreciative of all who have donated. This is a nationwide program. The Eastland program was started in 2009 by Wendy Porter. She deserves a vote of thanks for her drive to establish this local program that has helped so many children over the years. Finances are always of concern to those of us who administer this program.

A Memorial Day Ceremony was held at Eastland County Courthouse on Friday to honor all those fallen while serving our country . Water Aerobics for Senior Adults, ages 60 and above, will begin Tuesday, June 6th. Classes will meet every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10:00 am throughout the summer.

Over fifty years passed before Vietnam Veterans Larry Monroe and Bryant Strickland, who served together in Vietnam, met again. Strickland was returning from Las Vegas, Nevada to his home in Ellijay, Georgia when he called Larry and said he would be including Eastland on his route. Eastland County News staff was privileged to be a part of this reunion when Larry and wife Carolyn, Bryant and daughter Michelle stopped by. The two veterans talked together as if no time had lapsed.

The family at Bryans has made the decision to become NAPA Auto Parts beginning Thursday June 1st. This decision comes after months of meetings and very careful consideration from our entire family and team of employees. It’s no secret that we’ve had some difficult hurdles the last couple of years with our Parts Plus supplier selling out, and we know that this transition will have its share of problems too - but we are excited and very confident that this will be one of the best things we’ve ever done for our customers.
