By Ruth Stewart The Eastland County Commissioners’ Court met in a regular meeting on May 8, 2023 in the Eastland County Commissioners’ Courtroom in Eastland Texas. Judge Hullum called the meeting to order at 9:03 a.m. and declared a quorum. He also led the prayer and pledge.

The Annual Railhead Festival in downtown Baird will be held Saturday May 20th. The annual event is held to recognize the establishment of the City of Baird by the Texas & Pacific Railway.

LEON RIVER COWBOY CHURCH -- Congratulations to the Open Jackpot winners of the Sorting this past Saturday at Leon River Cowboy Church. God blessed us with a beautiful day, a little rain to water the arena before the Jackpot and just an amazing bunch of people!! Our message for the devotional was in John 14:6, which is also the memory verse for the 1st half of the series. Anyone attending (not just contestants) are encouraged to put the verse to heart. At the appointed Sorting we will have people available for you to recite the verse and get an awesome prize.

The Scranton Musical for this month will be May 6, 2023. The hostess for our dinner is Beth Bailey of Cisco, TX. The menu is enchilada casserole and salad. The meal costs $6.00 and includes tea or coffee with free refills. A dessert is $1.00.

(Ed. note: The Eastland Police Department asked for the public’s assistance in locating the individual named below in connection with a shooting that occurred last Tuesday night. The following press release was sent out by EPD Capt. Dan Wilson:) “Eastland Police Department would like to thank the public for all their help locating alleged suspect William Clay Pitts. Many leads were generated by the public which eventually lead to Clay Pitts arrest. Clay Pitts is being held in the Eastland County Jail on 4 charges with a total bond amount of $140,000.

The annual meeting of Kokomo Cemetery will be held Saturday, May 6 at 10 AM at the Community Center in Kokomo.

Corinth Cemetery Association will hold the Annual Meeting at the cemetery on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pavilion. Please bring your own chairs. The cemetery is located one-half mile from Highway 6, on County Road 154, between Cisco and Eastland.

Mitchell Cemetery will be having its annual cleanup and meeting on May 6th at 8:00. We welcome anyone who would like to help. Bring your mowers, weed eater and rakes. Hope to see you there.

Hi, I’m Shirley Stuart and I am running for City Commissioner for the City of Eastland. Many of you know me, while many of you do not. For those who do not, let me offer a brief introduction:

Hi! My name is Cecil Funderburgh, and I have filed an application for re-election to the Eastland City Commission.

Greetings My name is James Doyle, and I am asking for your vote on May 6 for the Eastland City Commission. I am currently working on the Eastland Economic Development Board and Planning & Zoning Board which I have served for 5 years. I also volunteer with our Eastland Hospital Volunteers and on our Chamber of Commerce Board. I was born in 1961 at our Eastland Hospital and graduated in the EHS class of 1979. I am currently employed at Atmos Energy for the past 40 years. My wife Nancy and I have 7 children and 14 grandchildren and we attend the Daugherty Street Church of Christ.

The Eastland Police Department has teamed up with a local business to rekindle an on-going Teddy Bear Program Brandon’s Dozer Service has graciously sponsored and purchased Teddy Bears to be placed in our squad cars. Teddy Bears have been around for some time, in fact, way back to President Teddy Roosevelt’s era (1902). After a little reading, it was learned that Brooklyn candy store owners Rose and Morris Michtom made the first stuffed bear toy based off a cartoon, which they appropriately named Theodore Roosevelt and over time became known as the Teddy Bear. This couple from Brooklyn, according to some stories made the bear after a hunting trip that President Roosevelt was on where he refused to shoot a tied up bear. They were so moved by this act, they were inspired to make the stuffed bear.
