With a total of eight directors, including present one Bill Harden, and after attending 8 Presidential inaugurals, 11 governor inaugurals, and visiting 42 states and 17 countries (so far) the “World Famous Hardin Simmons Univ. Cowboy Band “ has reached the centennial year since it’s founding under conductor D.O. Wiley in 1923 in Abilene.
April 28th was named officially the “Cowboy Band Day” after formerly being named that in 1973 when its date was June 19th.
Attending the meeting for the band at the Valhalla on campusthe Cowboy Band Hall were some 200 exes with present members also, and past directors Bill Wood, Scott Mather, Wayne Dorothy and son of the longest- attending director Marion McClure, Mike McClure, as well as an alumni Edmund Deyton, who graduated about 1950.
