Bird, Ivey lead Lady Mavs to third at 8-3A track meet

Lily Bird sprinted her way to the top of the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and Audrey Ivey picked up a gold medal in the field last week and helped spur the Eastland Lady Mavericks to third in the team standings at the District 8-3A track and Field Championships. The meet was held April 12-13 at Bob and Norma Cervetto Field in Dublin.
As a team, the Lady Mavericks rolled up 80 points. Brock won the girls’ Area title with 164 points. Early finished second at 110.
A sophomore, Bird continued to shine on the track for Eastland. She blazed her way to a winning time of 5 minutes, 47.14 in the 1,600. She tacked on a second gold medal by winning the 3,200-meter race with a time of 12:59.45.
EHS teammate Annaliss Hicks also did well in the distance running events. She was ninth in the 3,200 and 12th in the 1,600.
Ivey picked up Eastland’s third gold of the meet with a sensational effort in the discus throw. She turned in a heave of 105 feet, 5 inches to win the event.
Ivey also placed sixth in the shot put standings, throwing 29-4 ¾.
Adalynn Cunningham, Brooke Ainsworth and Cylea Carper added to the Lady Mavs’ medal count, too. Cunningham highlighted a strong EHS effort in the girls’ pole vault by soaring to second in the event by clearing 9-6. Jaci Darr and McKenna Fambro were fourth and seventh in the event.
Carper picked up a pair of silver medals on the track. She legged out a time of 16.61 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and placed second overall. Taylor Fullen gave the Lady Mavs a 2-3 finish by placing third in the race with a mark of 17.01.
Carper also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles race.
Ainsworth pocketed a silver medal with a second-place effort in the 100-meter dash. She clocked a time of 12.67 in the event.
Jay Oznick, Sammy Herrera and Andrew Hicks combined to carry the Mavericks to fourth in the boys’ team standings.
Oznick rolled up 20 points in the meet by placing in the top five in three events. He punched his ticket to the regional meet in the triple jump and high jump. IN the triple jump, he posted a winning leap of 43 feet, 3 ½ inches. He was second in the high jump standings at 6-2.
Herrera and Hicks also qualified for the regional meet. The two ran their way to 2-3 finished in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. Herrera was second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:50.86 – just under 2 seconds faster than Hicks’ 4:52.74. Hicks raced his was to second in the 3,200 with a mark of 10:14.35. Herrera was third at 10:42.89.
Miguel Hernandez also did well in the distance events. He was ninth in the 1,600-meter standings and seventh in the 3,200.
