If the 1980s were the golden age of Eastland High School Mavericks’ football program, the 2010’s and 2020’s would certainly have to be considered the silver age as Eastland rolled to a pair of district championships and six postseason appearance from 2016 to 2022.
The silver age came to an end last week when James Morton announced he would not be returning to the field as the Mavericks head coach this fall. A member of the Mavericks’ 1982 “Magic Mavs” squad that captured the Class 2A state title, Morton had served as Eastland’s head football coach for the past seven years.
“I always heard you would know when it was time, and this spring it became very clear to me that it was time,” said Morton. “This was on my timing not anyone else. I just felt it was a good time to step away and hand the reins over to Coach Schuman.”
