Xeriscape 101
Before we all start watering lawns and gardens this year, let’s think about practicing water conservation a little. All life depends on water and there is only a limited supply. Texas sees at least some stage of drought about 30% of the time so we can probably expect more dry years soon.
Nearly half of the roughly 250 gallons of water per day used in the average home in Texas is for landscape irrigation. Add to that, the population is expected to increase by 70% over the next 50 years. The first new major lake in the state in 30 years should start supplying municipal water sometime this year. It took over 15 years of legislation and cost $1.6 billion to build. Our county has 2 lakes, we all depend on them for water, so before we start water rationing look for ways to save it. We can’t make any more water so we must make wise use of what we do have.
