Eastland County honored its most famous Homed Toad - Old Rip - on Thursday, Feb. 27th at the County Court House. This celebrated Texas Homed Toad was sealed into the cornerstone of the Eastland County Courthouse when it was built in 1897. Wonders of wonders, however, the toad was still alive inside the sealed stone 31 years later, thus the name Old Rip, who quickly became a national celebrity. Old Rip unfortunately died in 1929 and now lies in state at the Eastland County Courthouse. Once a year, new county employees are encouraged to take the Old Rip Oath which helps to “perpetuate the Truth of Old Rip.”
