LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I haven’t written a letter to the editor in a long time. But, I feel I must offer an opinion concerning our Governors addiction to school voucher legislation. There must be a fortune invested somewhere, by someone, to put that much pressure on him and Dan Patrick to coerce legislators to vote for something they know their constituents don’t want by applying all kinds of pressure and threats. I have been told they even recruited candidates to run against legislators that would not vote for vouchers in the last session so they could possibly be insured vouchers would pass this time around. As an educator, I am totally against vouchers of any kind, under any other name or hidden program! However, if the people of Texas want vouchers, as our Governor says they do, then why does he not simply place it on a ballot and let Texans decide. I would still be against it, but if it passed, at least it would be the voters that chose it and not the private agenda of the Governor and Lt. Governor shoving it down our throats. I don’t think the Texas Constitution says a thing about our government using public funds to subsidize private schools or to pay for home schooling. Every parent has a right to educate their children at home or to pay for private schooling. It is their choice! If our Governor and Lt. Governor would concentrate on assisting our public schools the way they are trying to pay for home schooling and private schools, our teachers would be receiving competitive wages and there would be no teacher shortages. If they would quit trying to destroy the public
