One of the most enjoyable assignments for Cosmetology and Barber students at Cisco College is a pumpkin contest, now in its third year, in which students learn the principles of mixing colors.
“It comes about during our Color Theory class for hair coloring,” said Professor Rhonda Bryant, Director of the Cosmetology and Barber programs. “Much like art, we take colors, and we mix them.” She said the students start with five colors: white, black, red, yellow, and blue.
As the students mix their own colors, “if they make pink or aqua, they have to learn the mixing ratios for those. And they have to have some kind of creative design for their pumpkin,” Prof. Bryant said. “They have to have a game plan, they have to draw it out, mix the colors for them, and add any kind of decoration. They do a really good job.”
