Eastland County has been awarded a Local Hazard Mitigation Planning grant from the Texas General Land Office (GLO) to update the county’s Hazard Mitigation Plan. This critical project will provide communities with practical strategies to reduce long-term risks from natural hazards and disasters. Eastland County Judge David Hullum emphasized that the updated multi-jurisdictional plan will serve as a vital tool in safeguarding the future of the county’s residents and infrastructure. Remarkably, the GLO grant covers all costs associated with the plan, requiring no local match from the county.
In addition to Eastland County, the plan will encompass the incorporated cities of Eastland, Carbon, Cisco, Ranger, Rising Star, Gorman, and the Eastland County Water Supply District. Local independent school districts, the Eastland County Sheriff’s Department, and other key stakeholders will also be invited to participate in the plan’s development.
EEMA defines mitigation as “an investment in the community’s future safety and sustainability,” and highlights the critical role mitigation plays in protecting public safety, preventing loss of life, and preserving economic, cultural, and environmental assets. Natural disasters have the potential to impact every aspect of a community, often with devastating effects, which is why a comprehensive mitigation plan is so important.
