Through the ECWSD’s Board of Directors continued efforts to proactively keep our 70-year-old Lake Leon Dam safe and extend its life for decades to come, ECWSD and staff have started the construction of additional dam maintenance and rehabilitation improvement projects.
The dam is in good condition and does not currently leak or seep, but it does not have certain measures built in to it that new dams have these days to prevent long-term seepage issues. The new improvements to the dam will include installing a seepage control granular filter diaphragm around the outside of the 11-ft diameter concrete “morning glory” primary spillway conduit and inlet riser (the big “bathtub drain”) as well as patching up minor scars and cracks on the inside surface of the large concrete pipe for longevity.
The morning glory inlet will also receive an air vent pipe to reduce turbulence and vibrations to the structure during large flood stalling a new floating raw events that pass through the pipe.
