1968 Vietnam TET Offensive
A surprise attack escalated the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese New Year, known as TET, is one of the most important celebrations in the nation’s culture. However in 19668, North Vietnamese generals saw the occasion as the perfect time to launch a surprise attack on the Americans and South Vietnamese forces.
The goal of the attack was to start a rebellion among the South Vietnamese citizens, forcing the US to withdraw from Vietnam. In the early hours of January 30, as many families began their New Year celebrations, the Viet Cong attacked 13 cities in central South Vietnam.
