The Cisco College Art Department announced today that art major Karalynn Wilson was awarded first place in the 2D non-digital art category by the Center for Contemporary Arts for her piece, We Were Girls Together.
The 14th annual Intercollegiate Student Art Competition reception took place in Abilene, Texas, on November 9, 2023, showcasing the creative talents of students from colleges and universities in the region. Wilson’s art piece, which also was voted Crowd Favorite in the Lyric Art Center’s 2023 Old Rip’s Art Competition, will remain on display at the Center for Contemporary Arts’ gallery through the end of the exhibit.
We Were Girls Together is a nostalgic tribute to the innocence of childhood; particularly, the unique bond of sisterhood. The charcoal drawing portrays a candid snapshot of her four-year-old self with her nine-year-old sister, Kathryn. Her sister is depicted with headphones perched on her head, while she is presented smiling into the microphone, emblematic of their childhood performances. Her inspiration stemmed from numerous poems that encapsulated the essence of adolescence, often resonating with the phrase, “we were girls together.”
