Mavs look to cinch third vs. Comanche

‘Make no mistake about it, this week’s showdown with longtime rival Comanche means a lot to the Eastland Mavericks, even though they have already clinched a postseason spot. A win over the Indians would enable the Mavericks to climb into the thirdplace position in the District 5-3A standings. That third-place finish could enable Eastland to avoid seventh-ranked Holliday in the bi-district round of the postseason.

Eastland, coming off a 52-55 victory over Dublin last week, enters Friday’s showdown tied with Comanche for third in the district standings. The winner of the Comanche-Eastland will likely advance to the postseason at the thirdplace seed and face Henrietta in the opening round. The loser will finish fourth and face Holliday.

The Indians have rallied from a rocky start. After dropping three of their first five games, Comanche has win its last two district outings and improved to 5-3 overall. The Indians defeated Merkel on Friday by a 48-0 clip.
