Taylor Sugar PT, DPT and Hagen Black, PTA spoke about proper foot care and diabetic foot ulcer prevention at the August Lunch and Learn, hosted by Eastland Memorial Hospital.
The audience was asked to give their definition of diabetes. Most were spot on with their answer that diabetes is in summary - a chronic health condition which affects how your body turns food into energy.
DPT Sugar and PT Black explained that there are three types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetics. About 9095% of people with diabetes have type 2. The body doesn’t use insulin well and can’t keep blood sugar at normal levels. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults, although more and more youth are being diagnosed with Type 2, it was noted.
