FROM THE GORMAN MAYOR

I know everyone didn’t get six inches of rain a week ago, but we did in Gorman, and I know a lot of folks in the area that also got a good rain. It didn’t do much for the lake, but I know a lot of tanks are looking better. I think everything is looking greener too! It helps that we are getting cooler weather also. Although, only in Texas do we consider the 90’s cooler weather. Thanks to the rain I even had to mow my yard!

It is nice to see folks taking better care of their yards but even though we’ve had some rain the tall grass back behind properties is still a fire hazard and a concern. So, even though the burn ban has been lifted, it is mandatory to contact the Fire Department before doing any burning!

Please remember that the City has a website: www.thecityofgorman. com. You can find the agendas, ordinances, and other useful information there. If you have a question about anything, please email me at: gormanmayor@ yahoo.com I will do my best to address any concerns you have or call the city office. We held our regularly scheduled Commissioners meet on Thursday the 7th of September at 5:30pm in the Gorman Community Center. After our opening prayer and the Pledges, the Commissioners approved the minutes from the previous meeting, approved payment of the bills and received department head reports. The Commission then moved the auditor’s report up on the agenda to give them a better look at how the City stood financially. After his reports were approved as presented, the Commission moved on to the agenda items regarding our property tax rate. We had great citizen participation and discussion concerning our local property tax. As a result of that discussion, the Commission decided to leave the rate at the no new revenue tax rate and then passed 2nd reading of Ordinance 9-7-2023 adopting the Ad Valorem Tax Rate for 2023. The Commissioners then voted to repeat Ordinance 2023-10-05, a curfew ordinance as required by the State. They then passed Resolution 09-07-2023 Proclaiming World Teacher’s Day on Thursday, October 5th. A price increase of 2% for Sanitation/Trash pickup was then approved. This increase is from the vendor to the city and that is the only increase being passed on to our residents at the insistence of our auditor. The Commissioners then discussed the possible use of the Community Center for a quarterly catered senior citizen luncheon date. They all agreed it would be a good thing and we could move forward with plans. The last thing discussed by the Mayor was a need for a special called meeting the following week to address personnel. The meeting then adjourned.
