The Walnut Spring Hornets scored late in the second half on Thursday and then held on to grab a nail-biting 49-48 win over the Ranger Bulldogs in the 2023 season opener.
The Hornets’ win didn’t come easy. Ranger had an opportunity in the closing seconds to pull out a win. The Bulldogs ground on 47 attempts. Their longest run from scrimmage came via a 16-yard scramble by quarterback Gunnar Dillard.
Defensively, Eddie Medina and Kye Herrington starred for the Mavs. A junior, Medina racked up a game-high 14 tackles, including eight solos. Herrington chalked up 10 stops. Sophomore Brendan Foust added eight.
