Researching the Story of the 1860 Indian Raid Near McGough Springs

(Continued from August 17, 2023 edition)

Robert “Bob” Lemley was born in Graford in 1939 to Art and Lillie Martin Lemley. Bob's ancestors were among the first settlers in Palo Pinto. Lloyd Lemley, 85. died Sept. 10, 2010 in Graford, the son of Jess and Mettie Rouse Lemley. Wanda Jean Savage, 82, died in 2021 in Palo Pinto surrouned by her children, her sister Doris Hardin, had a daughter, Sheree Lemley and husband Brian Lemley. Grandchildren were Brad Lemley, Jim Lemley, and Sunnie Lemley.

Bringing the Lemleys back to Eastland County in this research is made possible because there is the Russel Creek-Lemley Cemetery near Ranger, Texas. Four graves there tie into this research: Amy Sherfield Lemley b. Dec 13, 1837, d. Apr 26, 1927; Mary Josephine Thurman Lemley b. May 26, 1873, d. Dec 29, 1948; Samuel Lemley b. 1823 Illinois, d. 1889, Ranger, Texas; Smith Lemley b. May 27, 1867, d. Jul 4, 1935. Note that the Samuel Lemley tombstone records that he was born in the State of Illinois and that the Lemley Cemetery in Parker County records on its historical marker that the Lemleys came from Illinois to Texas. I might interject here that there are two pieces of land on the Eastland County map of 1929 which record two locations where there was Lemley land NE of Ranger, Eastland County. L. Lemley is listed on Abstract No. 1529, and S. Lemley is listed on Abstract No. 1530, and mysteriously the name M. L. Woods is on the same Abstract.
