Recently I was in Abilene with two granddaughters (Laura and Leigha) on some sort of business and when it involved that time had slipped away, we just wanted to make one more stop— looked at the house where their late grandmother Gay Nell and I originally set up housekeeping. A G.I. eligible 2 bedroom on N. LaSalle where their late grandmother and I originally set up housekeeping on the north side where I had lived as an employee of the Reporter News— I had moved up from general reporter to Military editor because I had been in the Army and supposedly knew something about writing about Dyess AFB which was relatively new at that time.
When we got to the house, second house from N. 10th St. we found the present owner busy in the open garage on some sort of cleaning and/or comparable project.
We got out of the car and approached the many busy at work but he was so pleasant, having a reason to take a break from his cleaning project. We “howdied” and told him a little of our background at the house… we learned that the tree that Gay Nell and I planted years earlier had turned into a good shade and we also observed that the lawn was in great shape which we had originally put in when the GI House was brand new.
