High School football begins with lofty expectations in Rising Star

Rising Star Wildcat football is just around the corner and the enthusiasm is growing.

Rising Star Wildcat football is just around the corner and the enthusiasm is growing.

The coaching staff is led by head coach Derek Stevens in his third year at the helm. Prior to taking the helm at RSHS, he had made coaching stops at Gustine, Sidney, NCTA and May. Coach Stevens graduated from Howard Payne University where he was a standout free safety on the football team. He is ably assisted by Matt Lawrence, who in his second year, and Daren Miller, who is in his first year in Wildcat territory. The Wildcats return five starters on offense and four starters on defense from a team that was 9-2 overall and won District 14-1A, Division II, last year. Two of last year’s starters were freshmen, so there will be plenty of experience on this year’s squad.

The Wildcats traveled to Ranger for their first scrimmage. The team looked very impressive against the Bulldogs despite the fact that the temperature was 107 degrees.
