She was born in Denver, Colorado, May 23, 1979, and was adopted when she was 3 weeks old by Duane and Kathy Hale. She had a son named Brayden and was divorced from Nathan Richter. She has a brother in Austin named Bracken Hale. His family consists of Phoebe and a son Rune and a daughter Natalie.

Lee got her degree from the Norman, Oklahoma public schools. When she was a baby the family lived in Minneapolis 2 years and then moved to Norman, Oklahoma, where her mother taught at OU; her dad taught at the University of Minnesota and then was on a grant at OU. The Christian Adoption Agency in Denver required an autobiography from both the husband and wife when a child was adopted. The Hales promised to give Lee a Christian home. They went to the Church of Christ in Norman.
