How strange to be lost inside a good book when suddenly the narrator talks to you, the reader. When that happens, or when the characters themselves are aware that they are in a book, it’s called metafiction.
Via NetGalley promotions, I recently read an advance reader copy of West Heart Kill by Dann McDorman. (It’s due out October 24th.) West Heart Kill is a murder mystery set in the 1970s with bell bottoms, double-knit slacks, avocado-colored countertops, and all that. The narrator explains the mystery genre to the reader and asks the reader to watch out for weak alibis, double identities in the dramatis personae, and red herrings.
