Too Hot to Handle - theme of the May’s Lunch & Learn hosted by Eastland Memorial Hospital - was very timely and much needed. As it turned out, people across Texas were to experience higher than usual and even record breaking temperatures beginning in June. Those attending the program were given expert advice by Collin Craig, EMT - Paramedic, on heat related injuries and emergencies and - very important prevention.
Craig explained that a Heat Stroke is the most severe form of heat-related illness and is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY! CALL 9-1-1. Take immediate action to cool the person until help arrives. Signs of a Heat Stroke can include a throbbing headache, lack of or reduced sweating, body temperature rising above 103 F, red hot or cyanosis blue skin, altered mental state and confusion, nausea or vomiting.
Prevention can include spending time in air-conditioned environments - Increase in water intake - Non-caffeinated fluid intake Monitor urine output. Salt tablets are no longer recommended and may be hazardous to many people, Craig informed.
